If you are an Aussie or a Kiwi, you will know the pain of traveling and hunting for the perfect Flat White. Well, the US are catching up on the glorious, creamy, kick-start in a cup that is the Flat White!

Flat White ‘artisan coffee’ shops are popping up all over LA. Starbucks has integrated them into their menu in the US, Canada, and the UK starting with Oz in 2009 and they have been in the US for about a year.

If you are new to this, do yourself a favor and go to a place that does the Flat White right.

Nope, it’s not a latte or a cappuccino. Crazy, I know!

The Coffee Hunter, Peter J Thompson explains that the Flat White has an even mix of ‘liquid milk and smooth velvet foam so it feels like drinking an espresso, only yummier’.


The strength and kick of espresso is why I love it so much but espressos can sometimes be too strong.  Lattes fill me up and make me sleepy. I needed something that was in between. I do love a good macchiato (espresso served in an espresso cup with a tiny bit of milk) but there is nothing to sip on, so the Flat White is perfect.


An awesome clash of culture created the flat white.

In the 70’s a flock of Italians immigrated to Oz and NZ bringing with them their espresso culture and coffee machines.

The Italians loved their espresso and the ‘Anglo’ Aussies – most of which had Britsh origin put milk in everything, tea, coffee, they drank it by the glass or straight out of the cow. They drank their tea ‘black tea’ or ‘white tea’ meaning with milk or without. Many found the cappuccino too frothy and so they added more milk and less froth but the same shot of coffee.  Then – BOOM -the Flat White was born.

So there you have it, the flat white. It is the best parts of a cappuccino, espresso and a latte in one.  

As all good things from the South Pacific, Oz and NZ continue to fight over who came up with the idea first and there is still a very healthy coffee competition between both countries continues to push the quality of the coffee to new places. Now the UK is involved too!

Over the past fifteen years, the process has been refined which has brought on the ‘artisan coffee’ phase. There is now an intense focus on the roasting of the beans, the espresso pressure and the frothing of the milk creating ‘microfoam’. All of this is presented with crazy fun patterns to brighten your day. So jump in and give it a go.
